Llancaiach Fawr Manor, near Caerphilly
Often topping the list of the UK’s most haunted houses, a visit to Llancaiach Fawr is like stepping directly into a 17th-century ghost story. The manor is so paranormally active that it has been featured on countless television shows. Staff and visitors alike have reported chilling encounters, from the scent of lavender to the distinct feeling of a cold hand on their neck.
- The Spirits: The most prominent ghost is said to be Colonel Edward Prichard, the master of the house who switched his allegiance from King Charles I to the Parliamentarians during the Civil War. His troubled spirit is often seen staring out of windows. Others report hearing the playful laughter or mournful cries of a young boy named Mattie, while the spirit of a former housekeeper, Eliza, is said to keep a watchful eye on the rooms she once managed, her rustling skirts heard on the stairs.
St Donat’s Castle, Vale of Glamorgan
Home to the international Atlantic College, this stunning medieval castle has a tragic and romantic haunting. The ghost is that of Lady Stradling, who is said to wander the castle grounds and battlements.
- The Legend: The story goes that Lady Stradling’s lover, a swashbuckling pirate, was killed in a duel on the castle grounds. Distraught, she roams the fortress, forever searching for her lost love. Eyewitnesses have described seeing a spectral figure in a flowing white gown moving through the corridors, a chilling reminder of a love story cut brutally short.
Margam Castle, Port Talbot
This magnificent, gothic revival mansion is a jewel of South Wales, but its beauty hides a dark and violent past. The most famous of its spectral residents is Robert Scott, a gamekeeper who worked at the estate for decades.
- The Haunting: Scott was murdered by a poacher on the castle grounds, and his angry, tormented spirit is said to be the source of much of the paranormal activity. Visitors report hearing disembodied footsteps marching furiously down corridors, objects being thrown by an unseen force, and the sound of children giggling in empty rooms. The castle’s imposing staircase is a particular hotspot for sightings of his shadowy figure.
The Skirrid Mountain Inn, near Abergavenny
Reputedly one of the oldest pubs in Wales, The Skirrid Inn has a gruesome history that echoes through its ancient timbers. The pub was once used as a courthouse where, it is said, the infamous “Hanging Judge” Jeffreys condemned over 180 men to death.
- The Spirits: The beam over the staircase, still bearing the rope marks from the hangings, is a focal point for paranormal activity. Visitors and staff have reported feeling the terrifying sensation of a rope tightening around their neck, seeing shadowy figures, and hearing the agonised whispers of those condemned. The spirit of a former landlady, Fanny Price, is also said to make her presence known in the pub’s rooms.
Swansea Grand Theatre
Theatres are notorious hotspots for hauntings, and Swansea’s beautiful Grand Theatre is no exception. The resident ghost is a classic “White Lady,” a frequently reported apparition in theatres across Britain.
- The Story: She is believed to be the spirit of an actress who, years ago, was jilted by her lover, a famous actor of the day. Choosing to end her life within the theatre she loved, her presence is still felt. Staff have reported seeing her in the upper circles, leaving a single seat mysteriously lowered, and have caught the faint scent of her perfume in empty dressing rooms after the final curtain has fallen.
