New EU Entry Rules Will Impact UK Travellers
New regulations set to be introduced by the European Union will require travellers from the United Kingdom to obtain pre-authorization before entering or exiting the Schengen Area. This new system, known as the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), will affect all UK citizens, including those travelling to popular holiday destinations such as Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a visa waiver program similar to the existing ESTA scheme used by the United States. It is designed to strengthen security and streamline border control by screening travellers before they arrive in the Schengen Area. The system will collect biographical and travel information from applicants, including details about their health and criminal history, and check this information against various security databases.
How Will This Affect UK Travellers?
UK citizens will need to apply for ETIAS authorization online before their trip. The application process will involve completing a form and paying a fee. Once approved, the authorization will be valid for multiple entries into the Schengen Area over a period of three years or until the applicant’s passport expires. Travellers without ETIAS authorization will be denied boarding by airlines and other transportation providers.
When Will ETIAS Be Implemented?
The ETIAS scheme is currently expected to be launched in 2024. The exact date of implementation has not yet been announced, but the EU has indicated that it will provide ample notice to travellers before the system goes live.
